    Assistantships and Stipends
Ph.D. Applicants - Research assistantships are available on a competitive basis for students in the doctoral degree program. The current stipend is $21,700/year in addition to tuition remission.

M.S. Applicants - The Biomedical Sciences Program does not offer Graduate Assistantships (GA) for the Master's Program.  However, although Master's students are not encouraged to do so, they are permitted to seek assistantships through a Marshall University department.  Full-time GAs (whether teaching, research, or clerical assistants) work a maximum of 20 hours per week and are required to carry a minimum of nine credit hours.  Half-time GAs work a maximum of ten hours per week and are permitted to carry a reduced course load (if permitted by program and advisor).

    Tuition Waivers
In addition to graduate assistantships, scholarship tuition waivers for three semester hours of credit are available on a competitive basis for graduate course work (excluding e-courses). Applications for graduate tuition waivers for Marshall University are available through the Graduate Dean's Office, 113 Old Main, or you may contact your admission counselor.  Priority consideration will be given to faculty and staff of the state's public and private colleges and universities.  Academic merit, which will be determined using grade point average and scores on required graduate admissions examinations, will be the major consideration in awarding the waivers that cover tuition.  Students who receive waivers are responsible for paying student center and activity fees and some department specific fees by the University established due date.

Notification - Tuition waiver applicants who are awarded waivers will be notified by mail or e-mail.  All awarded waivers will be processed electronically and posted to students' accounts within 10 business days of approval and registration.  Applicants are responsible for any amount not covered by the waiver.  These balances must be paid by the tuition/fee due date as established by the University.

Can I get a tuition waiver every semester? - Students who previously held waivers must reapply by the due date (contact admission counselor for date) to be considered for the next term.  Please note that recipients of waivers will no longer need to go to the Graduate College office to pick up their approved tuition waivers.

Some comments from our current Biomedical Science, Ph.D. students:

"... coming here has been a great learning experience. I have received one-on-one help from both students and faculty and I truly believe that coming here was one of the best choices I made about graduate school. It has been a great preparation for the road ahead and I feel confident because of the education I have received here at Marshall University."

"I am currently working with Dr. Sasha Zill on locomotion nervous control.  His research is being used by engineers in the development of robots."

"There are opportunities to attend both national and international meetings."
