Graduate Student Organization

General Information

The Graduate Student Organization (GSO) is an association of graduate students at Marshall University's Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine enrolled in the Biomedical Science (BMS) graduate program. The purpose of the GSO is to promote student interests and represent the views of the graduate students. The GSO has four elected officers:

  • the President, who leads the monthly meetings

  • the Vice President, who attends the monthly Graduate Studies Committee (GSC) meetings and reports the issues discussed to the GSO

  • the Secretary, who records information presented the monthly meetings, and

  • the Treasurer, who is in charge of the finances of the GSO.

The GSC is comprised of faculty from each of the research clusters. It discusses issues ranging from classes offered to student admissions.

For more information on the GSO, please refer to our Frequently Asked Questions page.

Meetings

The GSO typically meets once a month. These meetings provide a great forum for informing students of important upcoming events - such as fundraising and administrative deadlines - and addressing the concerns of the students regarding the program, classes, etc. The meeting times also serve as an opportunity to hold workshops dealing with issues important to the students, such as how to put together a poster presentation or how to write a CV. Finally, they give graduate students a convenient time to socialize and get to know each other. Lunch is provided at every meeting.

GSO meetings are always advertised in the Calendar of Events, which can be reached through the website's left-hand navigation bar. Our goal is to post an agenda at least one week prior to each meeting. The website is also updated with the minutes from each meeting for those who are unable to attend. You can read the minutes of meetings by navigating to our Minutes page.

In addition to its regular business, the GSO also has a social aspect. It hosts an annual picnic for the newly accepted, incoming graduate students and also normally throws a party after classes are over in the summer. A group field trip, usually to Kings Island amusement park, is planned in the summer, so everyone can "get away from it all," and an annual Christmas party gives students the opportunity to get together to have a good time.

All students enrolled in the Biomedical Sciences program, including those in the Medical Sciences program, are considered members of the GSO. We invite and encourage students in these programs to attend and participate in the GSO meetings.
